The Macedon Ranges in Victoria is home to a number of highly awarded pinot noir producers. The mix of suitable soils and altitude-driven cool climate has attracted vignerons since the early 1960's and today includes wineries such as Hanging Rock, Rochford, Curly Flat and Bindi.

Hesket Estate, in the hands of the Hudspeth Stevenson family, is located 660 metres above sea level and produces a number of wines including a highly regarded sparkling cuvee, riesling and gewurztraminer. With only a very small output, you will most likely only find the Hesket Estate label in a few top Melbourne restaurants and even fewer independent wine retailers.

2005 was considered an excellent vintage in Victoria and it's no wonder the winery has chosen to hold some of their pinot noir stock back for late release.

"For the reds of the region this has resulted in rich, deeply-coloured wines of freshness and full flavour. The wines have a density of colour accompanied by structure and balance that suggest significant ageing potential" - 2005 Central Victorian Vintage Report, Winetitles Media

The Hesket Estate Pinot Noir 2005 is not for the faint hearted. Released by the winery after a dozen years in bottle, this wine shows little sign of ageing, exhibiting a dark garnet in the glass with a hint of brick red at the edges.

The nose delivers a rich wine-y spectrum of savoury notes including tomato leaf and smoky bacon as well as dark fruits such as black cherries. The palate is made succulent and lively by pronounced acidity, all adding to its full flavoured & voluptuous mouthfeel. This is a well seasoned wine which is still in possession of a very youthful vibrancy.
