Bodega Catena Zapata Chardonnay 2018 (Mendoza, Argentina) "...apple, lemon, white peach..."
Nicola Cantena planted his first Malbec vineyard in Mendoza in 1902 and today the estate is run by Nicholas Catena and his daughter Laura. Malbec continues to be the estates focus and the wineries pristine vineyards lie at the base of the Andes on soils of sand, lime and stone at altitudes between 920 and 1120 metres above sea level. Over the last 20 years, the fastidous vineyard work of Nicholas and Laura has paid dividends and Catena Zapata is now one of Argentina's most famous estates. Lush, beautifully created wines are what you can expect from Catena Zapata.
Catena Chardonnay combines the unique expressions of three high altitude vineyard sites. The wine shows an intense greenish color with yellow notes. The extraordinary combination of these vineyards offer honey and tropical fruit flavors while lending notes of citrus, pears, peaches, and white flowers with a strong minerality and a delicate note of vanilla. The mouthfeel is clean, with a fresh, clean acidity.
Through decades of study and exploration within Mendoza's high altitude mountain terroirs, the Catena family has identified special locations for its Estate vineyards. From the marriage of these historic vineyards emerges a wine of unique character that has natural balance, concentration and a distinct varietal identity.
"The balsamic, smoky and spicy white 2018 Catena Chardonnay is a blend of different vineyards matured in oak barrels for ten months. 2018 was a very good harvest in Mendoza after two unusual vintages, the extremely wet 2016 and 2017 marked by frost and a very warm end of the season. 2018 is a "normal" year, with good quality and normal volumes. This Chardonnay is a fresh and varietal bottling with good balance; they used some destemmed grapes for the first time, trying to obtain less oxidative musts, and the wine comes through as a balanced combination of fruit and oak with a pleasant mouthfeel. It's really excellent for the price asked. 276,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2019." – 91 Points, Wine Advocate
