Domaine Cornu Le Clos de Magny Cote de Nuits Village 2016 (Burgundy, France) "...raspberry, cherry, earth..."
A small family owned Domaine in the heart of the Côte-d’Or in the village of Magny-les-Villers, just outside Nuits-St-Georges. With holdings on 14 titles in both the Côtes de Beaune and Côtes de Nuits, across 19 acres farmed organically and vinified traditionally resulting in pure whites and muscular reds that age well. Champions of the Ladoix appellation at the foot of the hill of Corton, this is Burgundy with soul.
The domaine was founded over forty years ago with winemaking in the hands of Alex Cornu who took over from his father Claude in 2008, although Claude is very much still a strong presence in the cellar. After working at Vosne Romanee’s most famous producer Romanee Conti for several years Claude returned to the family estate and grew holdings from 3 acres to the current holding of 19 acres with vines in some fantastic sites including Savigny Le Beaune, Ladoix, Pernand Vergelesses and the flagship holding on the famous Grand Cru hill of Corton.
The vineyard practices are predominantly organic or “Lutte Raisonee” practices (organic in principal just without formal certification) and produce vibrant fruit of high quality and low yields. In the winery wild yeasts are used and all reds are 100% destemmed with a mixture of barrel age and maturation depending on the cuvee.
This wine is 100% pinot noir, vines range in age from 15 – 45 years old (average of 30 years), grown on clay and limestone soils from the village of Magny-les-Villers with five plots: Mailles, Tourelle, Tilles, Chaumes and Cras in appellation Hautes Cotes de Nuits. Traditional winemaking practices .. 100% destemmed, wild yeasts. Maturation in 2nd and 3rd use French oak for 18 months
2016 was an exceptional growing season in Burgundy -although yields were down by over 50% in many parts due to frost damage, quality of the fruit was ripe with beautiful acid balance producing gorgeous whites and reds with poise, vibrancy, more classic in style. This fine rouge over delivers depth of red and black fruits, vibrant balance with more-ish fine grained tannins. Delicious red burgundy on offer here (more classic than the 2015 release) for a modest price !
