Sorrenberg Gamay 2019 (Beechworth, Victoria) "...sour cherry, red berries, cardamom..."
Sadly, volumes of 2019 Sorrenberg Gamay produced are well below previous years, which only goes to make a cult wine even more sought after. Even sadder, there will not be a 2020 vintage release due to the bushfires experienced over the 2019/2020 summer. What does that really mean? Well...if you're already a Sorrenberg Gamay fan it probably means you shouldn't delay in snapping up what little there is, considering there won't be another offer until July 2022. It also means if you're yet to discover the joy of Barry and Jan Morey's vision and experience then you won't find out what you're missing out on for another couple of years. Which, potentially, might be a good thing. - Erez
The style of Gamay Sorrenberg produce uses a combination of traditional Gamay techniques. There is 10% Pinot Noir used in the blend. Half of the Gamay was cold macerated where the fruit is picked cold, crushed and left to soak for 4 days before fermentation starts. Of the rest, 20% of the fruit is left whole in the ferment. Fermentation with natural yeast is for 2 weeks on skins, after which the wine is pressed and matured in oak for eleven months.
"The 2019 is showing aromatics of sour cherry, red berries and hints of cardamom spice. The red berry fruit carries through onto the palate where fine grain tannins and natural acidity combine with earthy undertones to develop a balanced palate with a lingering finish." - winery notes
This wine will cellar for at least 8 years.
