Wairau River Pinot Noir 2017 (Marlborough, New Zealand) "...dark cherry, raspberry, violet..."
Wairau River Estate is a family property located Marlborough, Phil and Chris Rose were among the pioneers to plant vines, as early as 1978. It is one of the most recognized wine producing properties in New Zealand. The wines produced by the Domaine are elegant and have the characteristic expression of their New Zealand roots, especially the Marlborough terroir.
Marlborough is located on the northeast coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is the sunniest region of New Zealand with a maritime climate with long hot summers, cool nights and low rainfall.
The grapes were harvested early in the morning to maintain their freshness and concentration. After a delicate destemming, a pre-fermentation cold maceration followed by a pigeage, by hand, during the fermentation, in order to delicately extract color and tannins. The wine was matured in French oak barrels for 10 months, before assembly and bottling at Domaine.
"Dark, even ruby-red colour with some depth and youthful purple hues, a little lighter on the edge. The nose is fresh with softly full aromas of dark-red cherry and raspberry fruit along with hints of dark plums, unfolding a little dark herb detail and fragrant violet florals. This shows good ripeness and fresh, primary notes. Medium-full bodied, the palate has bright and lively, vibrant flavours of dark cherries and raspberries, entwined with dark herb notes with violet floral elements. The flavours are soft, fulsome and mouthfilling with bright aromatics, and are underlined by grainy tannin extraction providing good structure, grip and line. The wine carries to a concentrated, deep finish of raspberries, cherries and plums. This is a bright and vibrant, youthfully fruity Pinot Noir with dark cherry and raspberry fruit along with herb and floral detail on a palate with good grip and structure. Match with lamb, beef and venison over the next 4 years. Fruit from the ‘Home’, ‘The Angler’ and ‘Kaituna’ vineyards, destemmed and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months in French oak barriques." - 18/20 Points, Raymond Chan
"Dense cherry, red licorice and sandalwood notes are generous and expressive, with a touch of forest floor on the finish. The tannins add an appealing structure but never get in the way." - 90 Points, Wine Spectator
